Abstract
This invention relates to making backwindable rod shaped batts or logs from highly oriented flash-spun continuous fibers. The fibers are conducted from the exit of a spinneret through a tunnel and into a two stage diverging nozzle to slow down the fibers for an organized collection in the collection section. The invention further includes an inflatable bladder in a discharge section for initiating the formation of the log and a mesh screen in the collection section for reducing the occurrence of fiber blow out through the gas discharge ports.
Claims14
An apparatus for forming a rod-shaped batt of continuous backwindable fibers wherein the continuous fibers are provided within a relatively concentrated stream of high speed gases from a fiber spinning source, the apparatus comprising:
- a nozzle section arranged to receive fibers and high speed gases and to allow the gases and fibers to gradually slow down, wherein said nozzle section comprises a tube having a diverging internal contour, a length of at least 1.5 times its diameter at its inlet, and a diverging half angle of less than or equal to about 20 degrees;
- a collection tube arranged to receive the fibers and gases from said nozzle section and having means in the periphery thereof for discharging the gases therefrom and a central passage for collecting the continuous fibers into the rod-shaped batt.
An apparatus for receiving continuous fibers from a flash-spinning arrangement and forming a rod-shaped batt of continuous backwindable fibers therefrom, wherein the continuous fibers are provided within a relatively concentrated stream of high speed gases, the apparatus comprising
- a tubular channel having a diverging internal contour arranged to receive the stream of gases and continuous fibers and allow the same to gradually slow down therein for collection in a manner which avoids tangling, wherein said tubular channel has a length of at least 1.5 times its inlet diameter and a half diverging angle of less than or equal to about 20 degrees;
- and
- a collection tube arranged to receive the fibers and gases from said tubular channel and having means in the periphery thereof for discharging the gases therefrom and a central passage for collecting the continuous fibers into the rod-shaped batt.
A system for producing continuous flash-spun fiber and collecting the same into rod-shaped batts such that the fibers are suited for being backwound from the batt, the system comprising:
- means for flash-spinning continuous fiber through a spinneret and into a diverging tunnel having an entrance and an exit;
- a nozzle section connected to said tunnel exit for gradually slowing down the continuous fibers and having a diverging internal contour, an inlet end for receiving the fibers from the diverging tunnel and an exit end for discharging the fibers, wherein there is a step change in cross sectional area between the tunnel exit and the inlet end of the nozzle section;
- a collection tube for receiving the discharged fibers connected to the exit end of the nozzle section and having a plurality of openings in the peripheral wall thereof for discharging flash-spun gases therefrom, a central passage for collecting the continuous fibers into a rod-shaped batt, a mesh screen lining the central passage to generally prevent portions of the fiber from extending through said openings, and a discharge at the end of said central passage for discharging the formed batt;
- a discharge section including a passage arranged to receive the formed batt from the collection tube:
- and
- constriction means for controlling the discharge of the fiber from the collection tube comprising a circumferentially arranged bladder having a generally sealed annular space on the outward periphery of said bladder and means for providing fluid into said annular space to move said bladder radially inward into said passage of the discharge section to effectively vary the dimension of said passage of the discharge section.
