Abstract
A spindle motor in a disc drive has a rotor assembly rotatably mounted to a base. A stator is mounted to the base and a magnet is mounted to the rotor assembly. The magnet or the stator is allowed to move in an axial direction relative to the other under the influence of magnetic interaction between the magnet and the stator. The magnet and stator are then rigidly fixed relative to one another in the axial direction.

A method of making a spindle motor in a disc drive, comprising:
- rotatably mounting a rotor assembly, to a base about an axis of rotation;
- mounting a stator to the base;
- mounting a magnet to the rotor assembly;
- allowing one of the magnet and the stator to move in an axial direction relative to another of the magnet and the stator under influence of magnetic interaction between the magnet and the stator;
- and
- rigidly fixing the magnet and the stator relative to one another to substantially preclude relative axial movement of the magnet and the stator after the one of the magnet and the stator has moved.
A method of making a spindle motor in a disc drive, comprising:
- providing a rotor assembly having a peripheral surface;
- mounting a magnet to the peripheral surface of the rotor assembly;
- rotatably mounting the rotor assembly to a base, the rotor assembly being rotatable about an axis of rotation;
- mounting a stator relative to the base and axially positioned along the axis of rotation proximate the magnet;
- allowing one of the magnet and the stator to axially align itself under influence of magnetic interaction between the magnet and the stator with another of the magnet and the stator;
- and
- fixedly attaching the magnet and the stator relative to one another to preclude axial movement of the magnet and the stator relative to one another.
A method of making a spindle motor in a disc drive, comprising:
- rotatably mounting a rotor assembly, including a rotatable shaft and hub sleeve, to a base;
- mounting a stator assembly to the base;
- mounting a magnet to an inner peripheral surface of the hub sleeve;
- allowing one of the magnet and the stator assembly to move relative to the hub sleeve under influence of magnetic interaction between the magnet and the stator assembly;
- and
- rigidly fixing the one of the magnet and the stator to one of the hub sleeve and the base, respectively, after allowing the one of the magnet and the stator to move relative to the hub sleeve.
