Abstract
A process for catalytic partial oxidation of a hydrocarbon is provided. The process includes: providing a feed gas mixture comprising an oxygen-containing gas and a hydrocarbon gas comprising one or more normal (C.sub.2 -C.sub.4)alkanes; providing a catalyst structure having a transparency of at least about 40%; and passing the feed gas mixture through the catalyst structure at a rate such that the superficial contact time of the feed gas mixture with the catalyst structure is no greater than about 1000 microseconds to produce an exit gas mixture comprising partial oxidation products.
Claims24
A process for catalytic partial oxidation of a hydrocarbon comprising:
- (a) providing a feed gas mixture comprising an oxygen-containing gas and a hydrocarbon gas comprising one or more normal (C.sub.2 -C.sub.4) alkanes;
- (b) providing a metal catalyst structure having a transparency of at least about 40%;
- (c) passing the feed gas mixture through the catalyst structure at a rate such that the superficial contact time of the feed gas mixture with the catalyst structure is no greater than about 1000 microseconds to produce an exit gas mixture comprising partial oxidation products comprising oxygenates.
A process for catalytic partial oxidation of a hydrocarbon comprising:
- (a) providing a feed gas mixture comprising an oxygen-containing gas, one or more normal (C.sub.2 -C.sub.4)alkanes, and no more than about 50 mole-% methane;
- (b) providing a metal catalyst structure having a transparency of at least about 40%;
- (c) passing the feed gas mixture through the catalyst structure at a rate such that the superficial contact time of the feed gas mixture with the catalyst structure is no greater than about 500 microseconds to produce an exit gas mixture comprising oxygenates, CO, and CO.sub.2 ;
- wherein the carbon selectivity for the oxygenates is at least about 5 mole-% carbon and the total carbon selectivity for CO and CO.sub.2 is no more than about 70 mole-% carbon;
- and
- (d) separating the oxygenates from the exit gas mixture.
A process for catalytic partial oxidation of a hydrocarbon comprising:
- (a) providing a substantially methane-free feed gas mixture comprising an oxygen-containing gas and one or more normal (C.sub.2 -C.sub.4)alkanes;
- (b) providing a metal catalyst structure comprising one layer of about 20-120 mesh gauze of Pt-Rh wire having a diameter of about 25 micrometers to about 2.5 millimeters;
- (c) passing the feed gas mixture through-the catalyst structure at a rate such that the superficial contact time of the feed gas mixture with the catalyst structure is no greater than about 500 microseconds to produce an exit gas mixture comprising oxygenates, CO, and CO.sub.2 ;
- wherein the carbon selectivity for the oxygenates is at least about 10 mole-% carbon and the total carbon selectivity for CO and CO.sub.2 is no more than about 50 mole-.% carbon;
- and
- (d) separating the oxygenates from the exit gas mixture.
