Abstract
A cold surface is obtained by coating a mat of ceramic particles that are bound together with a sol-gel binder and cooling the surface with a cryogen that wicks to the surface through pores in the mat.
Claims13
A method for providing a cold work surface using a porous ceramic composite to carry cryogen, comprising the steps of:
- (a) preparing a ceramic composite by felting a mat of ceramic particles from a slurry and binding the particles together with a sol-gel binder, wherein the mat has a working surface and wherein the particles are selected from microparticles or a mixture of microparticles and fibers, the fibers being about 0-99 wt % of the particles;
- (b) preparing a covering coating on the working surface;
- and
- (c) cooling the coating by wicking cryogen to the coating through the mat.

A method of preparing a coating on a porous mat of ceramic particles, comprising the steps of:
- (a) felting a mat of ceramic particles from a slurry, the particles being microparticles or a mixture of microparticles and fibers wherein the fibers comprise 0-99 wt % of the particles;
- (b) binding the particles in the mat with a sol-gel binder, the mat having a working surface;
- and
- (c) applying a coating on the working surface.
