Nitrogen containing 3-heteroaromatic substituted acrylonitrile compounds are useful as co-developers in combination with hindered phenol developers to produce high contrast black-and-white photothermographic and thermographic elements. The photothermographic and thermographic elements may be used as a photomask in a process where there is a subsequent exposure of an ultraviolet or short wavelength visible radiation-sensitive imageable medium.

3-Heteroaromatic-substituted acrylonitrile compounds are useful as co-developers in combination with hindered phenol developers to produce very high contrast black-and-white photothermographic and thermographic elements.

All materials used in the following examples are readily available from standard commercial sources, such as Aldrich Chemical Co. Milwaukee, Wis., unless otherwise specified. All percentages are by weight unless otherwise indicated. The following additional terms and materials were used.
Acryloid.TM. A-21 is an acrylic copolymer available from Rohm and Haas, Philadelphia, Pa.
