Abstract
A liquid crystal device is constituted by a pair of substrates disposed in parallel and each provided with a transparent electrode, and a chiral smectic liquid crystal disposed between the pair of substrates. At least one of the substrates is provided with a uniaxial alignment control film which have been rubbed in at least two different directions. Liquid crystal molecules may preferably form a pretilt angle of at least 5 degrees with respect to the alignment control film.
Claims5
A liquid crystal device, comprising:
- a pair of substrates disposed in parallel and each provided with a transparent electrode, and a chiral smectic liquid crystal layer disposed between the pair of substrates so as to form smectic layers providing a smectic layer normal;
- wherein at least one of the substrates is provided with a uniaxial alignment control film which has been divided into a plurality of regions subjected to uniaxial aligning treatment in at least two different directions so that the direction of the uniaxial aligning treatment in each region is deviated at an angle from a projection of the smectic layer normal onto the substrate.
