Substituted ortho-ethenylphenylacetic acid derivatives

A compound of the formula I ##STR118## where the index and the substituents have the following meanings:

• n is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4, where the radicals R.sup.1 can be different if n>1;
• X is CHOCH.sub.3, CHCH.sub.3 or NOCH.sub.3 ;
• Y is O or NH;
• R.sup.1 is halogen;
• C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl;
• C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl;
• C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy;
• C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy;
• C.sub.1 -or, if n>1, R is a 1,3-butadiene-1,4-diyl group bonded to two adjacent C atoms of the parent structure, which group can carry one to four halogen and/or one or two of the following radicals:
• C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy and C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio;
• R.sup.2 is nitro, cyano, halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylcarbonylamino, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxycarbonylamino or benzylcarbonylamino;
• R.sup.3 if X is CHOCH.sub.3 or NOCH.sub.3 and R.sup.2 is halogen, is phenyl, 1-naphthyl, 2-naphthyl, 5-isoxazolyl, 4-oxazolyl, 1,2,4-oxadiazol-5-yl, 1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl, 3-pyridinyl or 4-pyridinyl, where the aromatic rings may be unsubstituted or substituted;
• or is a group R.sup.4 --T--C(.dbd.Z.sup.1)-- or R.sup.5 --C(.dbd.Z.sup.2)--, where
• .dbd.Z.sup.1 is .dbd.O, .dbd.S or .dbd.NOR.sup.4 ;
• .dbd.Z.sup.2 is .dbd.O, .dbd.NOR.sup.4, .dbd.N--NR.sup.7 R.sup.8, .dbd.NO--C(.dbd.O)--R.sup.4, .dbd.NO--C(.dbd.O)--NR.sup.7 R.sup.8 or .dbd.N--NR.sup.7 --C(.dbd.O)--R.sup.4 ;
• --T-- is --O--, --S--, --NR.sup.7 --, --NR.sup.7 --NR.sup.8 --, --NOR.sup.7 -- or --NR.sup.7 O--;
• R.sup.4 is hydrogen;
• unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl;
• cyclopropyl, cyclopentyl, cyclohexyl, cyclopent-2-enyl, cyclohex-2-enyl, 2-tetrahydrofuranyl, 2-tetrahydrothienyl, 2-pyrrolidinyl, 3-isoxazolidinyl, 3-isothiazolidinyl, 1,3,4-oxazolidin-2-yl, 2,3-dihydrothien-2-yl, 4,5-isoxazolin-3-yl, 3-piperidinyl, 1,3-dioxan-5-yl, 4-piperidinyl, 2-tetrahydropyranyl or 4-tetrahydropyranyl, where the cyclic radicals may be unsubstituted or substituted;
• phenyl, 1-naphthyl, 2-naphthyl, 2-imidazolyl, 2-furyl, 3-furyl, 2-thienyl, 3-thienyl, 3-isoxazolyl, 2-oxazolyl, 1,2,4-oxadiazol-3-yl, 1,2,4-triazol-3-yl, 3-pyridinyl, 2-pyridinyl, 2-pyrimidinyl, 4-pyrimidinyl or 1,3,5-triazin-2-yl, where the aromatic radicals may be unsubstituted or substituted;
• R.sup.5 is hydrogen;
• cyano;
• halogen;
• unsubstituted or substituted alkyl or alkoxy;
• cyclopropyl, cyclopentyl, cyclohexyl, 2-tetrahydrofuranyl, 3-tetrahydrofuranyl, 2-tetrahydrothienyl, 2-oxazolidinyl or 2-thiazolidinyl, where the cyclic radicals may be unsubstituted or substituted;
• phenyl, 1-naphthyl, 2-naphthyl, 2-furyl, 2-thienyl, 2-oxazolyl, 2 -thiazolyl, 1-imidazolyl, 1-pyrrolyl, 1-pyrazolyl, 3-pyridinyl or 4-pyridinyl, where the aromatic radicals may be unsubstituted or substituted;
• R.sup.6 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl;
• R.sup.7 is hydrogen;
• R.sup.8 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl or COR.sup.7.
