Abstract
A processes and intermediates useful for the manufacture of the Wittig ester salts are disclosed. The Wittig ester salts are known as important C.sub.5 building blocks for the manufacture of various polyenecarboxylic acid esters in the field of carotenoid chemistry.

A process for producing a Wittig ester salt of the formula:
- Cl-(C.sub.6 H.sub.5).sub.3 P+CH.sub.2 CH.dbd.C(CH.sub.3)COORI'
- wherein R is C.sub.1-4 -alkyl,
- which process comprises reacting a compound of the formula:
- CH.sub.2 .dbd.CHC(Cl)( CH.sub.3)COOR IV
- wherein R is as in formula I', with triphenylphosphine dissolved in an organic solvent to obtain said Wittig ester salt.
