Abstract
Dansylethoxycarbonyl (Dans-EOC) groups which can be employed as base-labile 5'hydroxyl protective groups in chemical oligonucleotide synthesis are disclosed. These groups allow the preparation of a compound of the formula (I) ##STR1## which comprises reacting the compound of the formula (II) ##STR2## with a chlorocarbonyl donor.

A compound of the formula (IIIa) or (IIIb) ##STR26## in which DansEOC is a group of the formula ##STR27## R.sup.1 is hydrogen or a group of the formula ##STR28## and B is ##STR29## wherein R.sup.2 is a group of the formula ##STR30## R.sup.3 is hydrogen or ##STR31## R.sup.4 is a group of the formula ##STR32## R.sup.5 is --OH, ##STR33## and Y is H, CH.sub.3 or alkyl C.sub.1 -C.sub.4.
