Abstract
Filled thermoplastic pitch comprising particulate filler and advanced mesophase pitch having a TMA deformation temperature of at least 400.degree. C., and a method for the manufacture thereof. The filled thermoplastic pitch may be shaped and densified in one or more thermoforming operations. The resulting preform may be thermoset and carbonized in ordinary baking operations without requiring molds and pressurized vessels.

A thermoplastic composition comprising particulate filler and an advanced mesophase pitch having a TMA deformation temperature of at least 400.degree. C.
A thermoplastic composition comprising advanced mesophase pitch having a TMA deformation temperature in the range of from 400.degree. to 500.degree. C., and from 5 to about 60% by volume of a particulate filler, said composition having a bulk density of from 1.1 to about 1.8 g/cm.sup.3.
A carbon-carbon composite comprising from about 6 to about 80 wt % carbon fiber and from about 94 to about 20 wt % of an advanced mesophase pitch having a deformation temperature of at least 400.degree. C.
