Abstract
Method for providing alpha alumina-based abrasive grain having metal carbide on at least a portion of the outer surface thereof. The abrasive grain can be incorporated into a variety of abrasive products including bonded abrasive, nonwoven abrasive, and coated abrasive products.
Claims21
A method for making an alpha alumina-based abrasive grain, said method comprising heating a plurality of alpha alumina-based abrasive particles each having an outer surface including metal oxide, in the presence of a carbon source, for a time, at a temperature, and under a non-oxidizing atmosphere, sufficient to convert at least a portion of said metal oxide to metal carbide.
A method of making an abrasive article, said method comprising the steps of:
- (a) heating a plurality of alpha alumina-based abrasive particles, each having an outer surface including metal oxide, in the presence of a carbon source, for a time, at a temperature, and under a non-oxidizing atmosphere, sufficient to convert at least a portion of said metal oxide to metal carbide to provide a plurality of abrasive grain having an outer surface at least a portion of which comprises said metal carbide;
- and
- (b) combining said abrasive grain with binder to provide an abrasive article.
