Abstract
This invention relates to an improved drive and control means for matrix addressable electro-optic displays, such as passive matrix LCDs and active matrix LCDs. The present invention achieves improved drive and control of displays through the use of real time computation and memory circuits to simulate the electro-optic condition and the accumulated DC bias of individual display elements. This eliminates the burden of frequent and symmetrical reversals of the drive polarity, and allows the implementation of flexible DC drive methodologies.
Claims29
In combination,
- display means formed from a plurality of elements each constructed to provide for the display of an image in accordance with the introduction of signals to such element,
- first means for providing a plurality of signals each representing the image to be displayed on an individual one of the elements in the plurality, and
- second means for applying direct voltages to at least some of the elements simultaneously in accordance with the signals provided for such elements to obtain a display of the images for such elements on the display means.
A method of providing a display of an image, including the following steps:
- providing a display from a plurality of elements each constructed to provide for the display of an image in accordance with the introduction of signals to such element,
- providing for the introduction of signals to individual ones of the elements in the display to obtain the display of images in accordance with the characteristics of such signals, the image being characterized by a decay band;
- and
- introducing signals to individual ones of the elements to keep the image in the decay band for restoring said images in accordance with the characteristics of such signals.
In combination for use with display means formed from a plurality of elements each constructed to provide for the display of an image in accordance with the introduction of signals to such element,
- first means for providing signals representing the images to be demanded from individual elements in the display means,
- second means for storing signals representing the images provided from the individual elements in the display means,
- third means for providing, for the individual elements in the display means, signals representing the difference between the signals from the second and first means for such individual elements, and
- fourth means for changing the images from the individual elements in the display means in accordance with the signals from the third means for such individual elements.
In combination for use with display means formed from a plurality of elements each constructed to provide for the display of an image in accordance with the introduction of signals to such element,
- first means for providing successive sequences of signals each representing the image to be provided from an individual one of the elements in the display means, each successive sequence of signals representing the image to be provided by all of the elements in the display means, the first means providing the successive sequences of signals at a particular frequency on a synchronous basis,
- second means for processing the signals in each successive sequence on an asynchronous basis relative to the provisions of the signals in each such successive sequence by the first means, and
- third means for providing for the display of the images on the elements in the display means in each successive sequence in accordance with the processing of the signals by the second means on the asynchronous basis relative to the provisions of the signals in each such successive sequence by the first means.
A display driver to drive a plurality of pixels to display a demanded image, said pixels having a drive duty cycle, a drive refresh rate and a backplane/segment plane drive function, said display driver comprising:
- first means for determining the voltage conditions provided on individual ones of the pixels in the plurality;
- and
- second means for providing to the individual ones of the pixels individual drive duty cycles and individual refresh rates in real time in accordance with the voltage conditions determined by the first means to be provided on such individual ones of the pixels.
A real time image display comprising:
- a plurality of pixels;
- first means for providing a plurality of signals representing images displayed in individual ones of said pixels;
- second means for providing a plurality of signals representing images demanded to be displayed in said individual ones of said pixels;
- and
- driver means responsive to said signals from said first and second means for said individual ones of said pixels for driving said individual ones of said pixels in real time to produce said demanded display, at least some of said pixels being driven simultaneously.
A display driver to drive a plurality of pixels to display a demanded image, said display driver comprising:
- a plurality of conductive electrodes arrayed in a plurality of rows and a plurality of columns so as to define pixels at points of intersection of said arrayed electrodes in said rows and columns;
- means for providing a demanded image;
- and
- means connected to said electrodes in said plurality and responsive to the demanded image for driving said electrodes to display the demanded image by driving the electrodes in more than one of the rows in the plurality and in more than one of the columns in the plurality simultaneously in a sequence dependent upon the demanded image.
