Abstract
An electric busbar for use with an electrical power distribution busway system which includes a press formed plug-in tab configured for attachment to a connector at a power tap-off section of the busway is described. The busbar has a substantially rectangular cross-section, a length, a width defined by a pair of edges, and a thickness defined by a top side and a bottom side. The plug-in tab is formed by pressing the conductive material in a direction generally perpendicular to the top and bottom sides until material is displaced outwardly from at least one of the edges. Depressions are formed in the bar of conductive material at the location of the press formed tab. In the most preferred embodiment, the volume of the depressions is substantially equal to the volume of the material in the tab.
Claims26
An electrically conductive busbar, comprising:
- an elongate bar of conductive material with a substantially rectangular cross-section having a width defined by a pair of edges, and a thickness defined by top and bottom sides;
- at least one depression pressed into the bar at one edge at a location;
- and
- a tab formed from the material displaced during pressing of the depression, the tab extending from the edge at the location, the tab providing an electrical connection to the busbar.
An electrical power distribution busway, comprising:
- an elongate housing;
- and
- a set of at least two conductive busbars mounted in the housing, the conductive busbars being mounted generally parallel to each other, wherein each busbar includes:
- a bar of conductive material with a substantially rectangular cross-section having a width defined by a pair of edges, and a thickness defined by top and bottom sides;
- at least one depression formed in the bar at one edge at a location;
- and
- a tab formed from the material displaced during pressing of the depression, the tab extending from the edge at the location, the tab providing an electrical connection to the busway.
An electrical power distribution busway, comprising:
- an elongate housing;
- and
- a set of at least three conductive busbars mounted in the housing, the conductive busbars being mounted generally parallel to each other, wherein each busbar includes:
- a bar of conductive material having a substantially rectangular cross-section, a length, a width defined by a pair of edges, and a thickness defined by top and bottom sides;
- at least one depression formed in the bar along the length at one edge at a location;
- and
- a tab formed from the material displaced during pressing of the depression, the tab extending from the edge at the location, the tab providing an electrical connection to the busway.
An electrically conductive busbar, comprising:
- a length of conductive bar with a cross-section circumscribed by a surface;
- at least one depression pressed into the bar at a location along the length;
- and
- a tab formed from the material displaced during pressing of the depression, the tab extending from the edge at the location, the tab providing an electrical connection to the busbar.
An electrical power distributor busway comprising:
- an elongate housing;
- and
- a set of at least three conductive busbars mounted in the housing, the conductive busbars being mounted generally parallel to each other, wherein each busbar includes:
- a bar of conductive material having a substantially rectangular cross-section, a length, a width defined by a pair of edges, and a thickness defined by top and bottom sides;
- at least one depression formed in the bar along the length at one edge at a location;
- and
- a tab formed from the material displaced during pressing of the depression, the tab extending from the edge at the location, the tab providing an electrical connection to the busway, wherein the plug-in tabs of each adjacent busbar are formed in a staggered orientation.
A method for making an electrically conductive busbar, comprising the step of:
- press forming a depression in a bar of conductive material having a substantially rectangular cross-section, a length, a width defined by a pair of edges, and a thickness defined by top and bottom sides, at a location along the length at one edge to form a tab extending outwardly from the edge, wherein volume of the depression is substantially equal to volume of material in the tab.
An electrically conductive busbar, comprising:
- a conductive bar cross-section circumscribed by a surface, where the cross-section is configured such that the bar can conduct at least 200 amperes at least 100 volts;
- at least one depression pressed into the bar at a location;
- and
- a tab formed from the material displaced during pressing of the depression, the tab extending from the location, the tab providing an electrical connection to the busbar.
A method for making an electrically conductive busbar, comprising the step of:
- press forming a bar of conductive material having a substantially rectangular cross-section, a length, a width defined by a pair of edges, and a thickness defined by top and bottom sides, by pressing the bar generally perpendicular to the top and bottom sides at a location along the length at one edge to form a tab having a thickness less than the thickness of the bar that is displaced outwardly from the edge.
