Abstract
The liquid crystal display device having electrodes which form picture elements matrix and generate an electric field substantially parallel to a substrate is composed of so as to have a brightness recovering time of no greater than five minutes, wherein the brightness recovering time is the time until the brightness of displayed portion that has been displayed for 30 minutes and is turned off returns to the background brightness.

A liquid crystal display device comprising:
- a plurality of display picture elements, each being composed of electrodes on a substrate;
- an orienting film for a liquid crystal layer formed on the substrate directly or via an insulating layer, said substrate being arranged so as to face another substrate on which another orienting film is formed, the liquid crystal layer being held between said two substrates, and said electrodes being composed so as to generate an electric field substantially parallel to said substrates and to the liquid crystal layer;
- and
- substantially similar products ((.epsilon..sub.r .rho.).sub.LC, (.epsilon..sub.r .rho.).sub.AF, and (.epsilon..sub.r .rho.).sub.PAS) of a specific dielectric constant .epsilon..sub.r and a specific resistivity .rho. are provided for respective ones of the liquid crystal layer, the orienting film, and the insulating film.
