Abstract
A computer including an acoustically shielded hard disk drive. Exhaust vents are provided in the computer housing above a convectively cooled power supply. The power supply and, if necessary, a plurality of fans mounted inboard from the intake vents, move the air throughout the computer. The resulting computer produces no more than 25 decibels of noise when in operation. A sound absorption layer surrounds the disk drive assembly. A heat sink mounted exterior to the sound absorption layer is connected by a heat conductive path to the disk drive assembly so as to conduct heat from the disk drive out to the exteriorly mounted heat sink. The disk drive may be immediately surrounded by a fluid containing pouch and a metal bracket.
Claims28
A computer comprising:
- a housing;
- a hard disk drive mounted within said housing for storing and retrieving data;
- computer circuit boards mounted within said housing in communication with said hard disk drive;
- a heat generating power supply arranged within said housing for providing a regulated voltage to said computer circuit boards;
- a fan mounted in said housing for moving air past said computer circuit boards;
- an acoustic shield arranged about said hard disk drive such that said computer produces no more than 25 decibels of sound substantially throughout active operation;
- a heat sink arranged exterior of said acoustic shield so that air moving through said housing passes over said heat sink;
- and
- a heat conductive path from said heat sink through said acoustic shield to said hard disk drive.
A computer comprising:
- a housing having a height, a width and a depth wherein the height is smaller than either of the width or depth, said housing including a front face having dimensions defined by the height and width of the housing, a side face having dimensions defined by the height and depth of the housing and a top face having dimensions defined by the width and depth of the housing;
- intake vents in said side face for intake of air into said housing;
- a vertical air barrier arranged within said housing oppositely disposed from said intake vents and parallel to said side face;
- a plurality of connectors arranged on said vertical barrier for receiving and juxtaposing horizontally oriented computer circuit boards;
- a hard disk drive, in electrical communication with computer circuit boards mounted in any of said plurality of connectors, mounted within said housing for storing and retrieving data;
- a layer of sound absorptive porous foam material surrounding said hard disk drive;
- a heat generating power supply mounted within said housing for providing a regulated voltage to said computer circuit boards, said power supply having side vents and top vents so that air entering said housing through said intake vents is convectively pulled in through the side vents and out through the top vents;
- and
- exhaust vents in the top face of said housing disposed above the top vents of said power supply.
A computer comprising:
- a housing having a height, a width and a depth wherein the height is smaller than either of the width or depth, said housing including a front face having dimensions defined by the height and width of the housing, a side face having dimensions defined by the height and depth of the housing and a top face having dimensions defined by the width and depth of the housing;
- intake vents in said side face for intake of air into said housing;
- a vertical air barrier arranged within said housing oppositely disposed from said intake vents and parallel to said side face;
- a plurality of connectors arranged on said vertical barrier for receiving and juxtaposing horizontally oriented computer circuit boards;
- a hard disk drive, in electrical communication with computer circuit boards mounted in any of said plurality of connectors, mounted within said housing for storing and retrieving data;
- a flexible fluid-containing pouch arranged about said hard disk drive for cooling and acoustically shielding said hard disk drive;
- a heat generating power supply mounted within said housing for providing a regulated voltage to said computer circuit boards, said power supply having side vents and top vents so that air entering said housing through said intake vents is convectively pulled in through the side vents and out through the top vents;
- and
- exhaust vents in the top face of said housing disposed above the top vents of said power supply.
