Data communication system using identification protocol

A communication system comprising:

• a) a communication medium:
• b) a plurality of first stations, each first station coupled to the medium and each comprising:
• 1) a first receiver for receiving a command signal, the command signal comprising a first address, the first address for exciting a response from a first portion of the plurality;
• 2) means, responsive to the command signal, for selecting a temporary self designation from a predetermined set of designations, the number of members in the set being more than one;
• 3) a first transmitter for transmitting a reply signal characterized by the self designation, each of the first portion of the plurality transmitting substantially simultaneously after reception of the command signal, wherein the first transmitter further comprises a circuit responsive to the command signal, the circuit having a first mode of operation for allowing transmission of the reply signal and a second mode of operation for preventing transmission of the reply signal;
• and
• c) a second station coupled to the medium comprising;
• 1) a second transmitter for transmitting the command signal;
• 2) a second receiver for receiving the reply signal;
• 3) means for determining the self designation from the reply signal;
• 4) a first circuit for providing a collision detection signal;
• and
• 5) means responsive to the collision detection signal for specifying a second address different from the first address the second address for exciting a second portion of the plurality.

A transceiver comprising:

• a) means for providing a first self designation, the first self designation being a member of a predetermined set of designations, the number of members in the set being more than one;
• b) a receiver for receiving a command signal, the command signal comprising an address corresponding to a subset of the set, the number of members in the subset being more than one;
• c) means, responsive to the first self designation, for determining whether the transceiver is addressed by the command signal;
• d) means, responsive to the command signal, for selecting a second self designation from the set, and for providing the second self designation;
• and
• e) a transmitter for transmitting a reply signal when addressed, the reply signal characterized by the second self designation.

A radio frequency identification system employing spread spectrum communication through a medium in which a collision occurs when more than one responder transmits simultaneously, the system comprising:

• a) an interrogator coupled to the medium comprising:
• 1) a first transmitter for transmitting a first command packet comprising a first multicast address and a second command packet comprising a second multicast address different from the first multicast address;
• 2) a circuit providing a collision detection signal;
• 3) a first receiver for receiving a reply packet;
• and
• 4) a first circuit for determining a responder self designation from the reply packet and for specifying the second multicast address responsive to the collision detection signal;
• and
• b) a plurality of responders, each responder coupled to the medium and each comprising:
• 1) a second receiver for receiving the first command packet and the second command packet;
• 2) a second circuit having a first mode of operation for allowing transmission of the reply packet and a second mode of operation for preventing transmission of the reply packet, the second circuit being responsive to the first command packet for selecting one of said first and second modes of operation and for selecting and storing a self designation, the self designation comprising a random number;
• and
• 3) a second transmitter for transmitting the reply packet, the reply packet comprising the self designation.

A responder for use in a radio frequency identification system employing spread spectrum communication, the responder comprising;

• a) a receiver for receiving a command packet, the command packet comprising a multicast address;
• b) a first circuit having a first mode of operation for allowing transmission of a reply packet and a second mode of operation for preventing transmission of the reply packet, the first circuit being responsive to the command packet for selecting one of said first and second modes of operation and for selecting and storing a self designation, the self designation comprising a random number;
• and
• c) a transmitter for transmitting the reply packet, the reply packet comprising the self designation.

An interrogator for use in a radio frequency identification system employing spread spectrum communication, the interrogator comprising:

• a) a transmitter for transmitting a first command packet comprising a first multicast address and for transmitting a second command packet comprising a second multicast address different from the first multicast address;
• b) a receiver for receiving a reply packet;
• and
• c) a circuit for:
• 1) providing a collision detection signal;
• 2) determining a responder self designation from the reply packet;
• and
• 3) specifying the second multicast address responsive to the collision detection signal, the responder self designation being responsive to the first command packet.
