Abstract
A process for preparing a modified polysaccharide graft copolymer complex which comprises the steps of: i. subjecting polysaccharide to graft copolymerization with a vinyl monomer; ii. treating the polysaccharide graft copolymer with: a. polyethylene glycol to provide a polymer-PEG complex; or b. a silicate compound to provide a silica precipitated polymer; and iii. recovering the polymer-PEG complex or silica precipitated polymer. This modified polysaccharide graft copolymer may be used as a surface sizing agent in the preparation of paper.

A process for preparing a modified polysaccharide graft copolymer complex which comprises the steps of:
- i. subjecting polysaccharide to graft copolymerization with a vinyl monomer;
- treating the polysaccharide graft copolymer with
- a. polyethylene glycol (PEG) to provide a polymer PEG complex;
- or
- b. treating the polysaccharide graft copolymer with a silicate compound to provide a silica precipitated polymer;
- and
- recovering the polymer-PEG complex or silica precipitated polymer.
Paper which is surface sized by treating the paper surface with 0.5 to 20% by weight, based on the weight of dry paper, of a modified polysaccharide graft copolymer which is prepared by the steps of:
- i. subjecting polysaccharide to graft copolymerization with a vinyl monomer;
- ii. treating the polysaccharide graft copolymer with
- a. polyethylene glycol (PEG) to provide a polymer PEG complex;
- or
- b. treating the polysaccharide graft copolymer with a silicate compound to provide a silica precipitated polymer;
- and
- iii. recovering the polymer-PEG complex or silica precipitated polymer.
