Abstract
A surface for the alignment of liquid crystals containing directionally-linked groups.
Claims30
A substrate having on at least a portion of a surface thereof a chemisorbed anisotropic directionally linked layer comprising a compound of the formula:
- [X].sub.m --[S].sub.n --[P].sub.o 1
- wherein X is a chemical functional group capable of chemisorption to said substrate, S is a spacer group separating X and P, and P is a directionally linkable group, and n, m and o are all integers greater than or equal to 1, wherein m.gtoreq.n and o.gtoreq.n.
An article of manufacture, comprising a liquid crystalline composition, said liquid crystalline composition comprising at least two different types of liquid crystalline molecules, and wherein said liquid crystalline composition is in contact with a substrate having thereon a chemisorbed directionally linked alignment layer comprising a compound of the formula:
- [X].sub.m --[S].sub.n --[P].sub.o 1
- wherein X is a chemical functional group capable of chemisorption to said substrate, S is a spacer group separating X and P, P is a directionally linkable group, and n, m and o are all integers greater than or equal to 1, wherein m.gtoreq.n and o.gtoreq.n.
