Abstract
Spectacle frames and earstems made of composite material comprising a plurality of resin saturated wood laminates compressed into a densified form. The frames and earstems are machined from a single block of the densified wood using a CNC machine. The earstems are attached to the frames with spring hinges. The contours of the frames and earstems reveal varying laminate layers to create an attractive wood grain or color pattern.
Claims35
Spectacles, comprising:
- a frame;
- a pair of earpieces attached to said frame;
- wherein said frame is of unitary construction and formed of densified wood and said earpieces are each of unitary construction and formed of densified wood.
A method of manufacturing spectacles, comprising:
- cutting a frame and a pair of earpieces from densified wood.
A method of making spectacles, comprising the steps of:
- providing a material comprised of plural stacked laminations, each lamination in said stack of laminations being joined to an adjacent lamination along a junction, said stack of laminations comprising a plurality of substantially parallel junctions, each of said laminations having a thickness;
- cutting said material in the shape of a frame for said spectacles using a computer numerical control machine, said cutting comprising shaping said frame with a thickness substantially greater than the thickness of any one of said laminations, said shaping comprising cutting across a plurality of said substantially parallel junctions to form an exterior surface of said frame and thereby expose plural laminations and plural junctions.
A pair of spectacles, comprising:
- a frame machined from a block of stacked laminates including at least three planar laminates joined together at junctions so as to provide at least one interior laminate, said frame having a front face and machined so that said at least three planar laminates including an exterior surface of said at least one interior laminate, are visible on said front face, said exterior surface having a dimension along said exterior surface greater than the thickness of the interior laminate.
A pair of spectacles, comprising:
- a frame comprising at least first, second, and third stacked laminates, said second laminate between said first and third laminates and joined to said first and third laminates at respective first and second junctions, said junctions defining a band therebetween visible along an exterior surface of said frame, the width of said band along said exterior surface being substantially greater than the thickness of the second laminate in said stacked laminates.
