Abstract
Polycyclic vat dyes of the general formula I ##STR1## where X is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, halogen or nitro, obtainable by reacting (9)-benzo-5-aminoanthraquinonyl(2,1-h)-8-azapyrenone-3(II) ##STR2## with a benzoyl chloride of the formula III ##STR3## in a dipolar aprotic solvent.

Polycyclic vat dyes of the formula ##STR8## where X is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, halogen or nitro, obtained by reacting (9)-benzo-5-aminoanthraquinonyl(2,1-h)-8-azapyrenone-3(II) ##STR9## a benzoyl chloride of the formula III ##STR10## a dipolar aprotic solvent selected from the group consisting of aliphatic carboxamides, six-membered lactams, five or six-membered cyclic ureas, aliphatic sulfoxides and sulfones.
