Substituted benzopyran and tetrahydronaphthalene compounds useful for safening herbicides in crops

A compound having the structural formula ##STR28## wherein X is O or S(O).sub.q ;

• q is an integer of 0, 1 or 2;
• Z, Z.sub.1 and Z.sub.2 are each independently hydrogen, F, Cl, Br, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy, phenoxy optionally substituted with one or more halogen atoms or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl groups optionally substituted with one or more halogen atoms, or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl optionally substituted with one or more halogen atoms, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy groups or hydroxy groups, provided that only one of Z--Z.sub.2 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkoxyalkyl or phenoxy optionally substituted with one or more halogen atoms or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl groups optionally substituted with one or more halogen atoms;
• Y and Y.sub.1 are each independently hydrogen, F, Cl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl, provided that when Y is F or Cl, then Y.sub.1 is hydrogen;
• W is CH.sub.2 A or when taken together with W.sub.1, WW.sub.1 is represented by the structure --CH.sub.2 C(O)OC(O)--;
• W.sub.1 is A or when taken together with W, W.sub.1 W is represented by the structure --C(O)OC(O)CH.sub.2 --;
• A is C(O)X.sub.1 or CH(OR.sub.4).sub.2 ;
• X.sub.1 is OR.sub.5 or SR.sub.9 ;
• R.sub.5 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 alkenyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 alkynyl or an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, manganese, copper, zinc, cobalt, silver, nickel, ammonium or organic ammonium cation;
• R.sub.9 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 alkenyl or C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 alkynyl;
• R.sub.4 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl and when taken together R.sub.4 and a second R.sub.4 may form a ring in which R.sub.4 R.sub.4 are represented by --(CH.sub.2).sub.2 -- or --(CH.sub.2).sub.3 --;
• and the optical isomers thereof;
• provided that when Y is hydrogen and Y.sub.1 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl, then one of Z, Z.sub.1 or Z.sub.2 is phenoxy optionally substituted with one or more halogen atoms or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl groups optionally substituted with one or more halogen atoms.
