Seeded sol-gel alumina abrasive grits with improved grinding performance incorporating alkali metal oxides selected from rubidium and cesium oxides.

A sol-gel alumina abrasive grit which comprises from about 0.01 to about 2% by weight of an alkali metal oxide selected from the group consisting of rubidium oxide, cesium oxide and mixtures thereof.
A seeded sol-gel alumina abrasive grit which comprises from about 0.03 to about 1% by weight of rubidium oxide and from about 0.5 to about 15% by weight of magnesium oxide.
A seeded sol-gel alumina abrasive grit which comprises from about 0.05 to about 0.5% by weight of rubidium oxide and from about 0.5 to about 15% by weight of magnesium oxide.
