Abstract
An implantable defibrillator derives a rectangular current waveform from a capacitor discharge by using a current limiter. This pulse-shaping method is equally applicable to single-path and multiple-path situations. A rectangular pulse delivers a maximum of energy for a given peak-field value with a particular electrode combination and pulse duration. Peak field is a measure of the tissue-damage potentiality of a particular discharge.
Claims6
An implantable defibrillation system comprising:
- an implantable housing adapted for implantation into a human patient and containing:
- capacitor means for storing an electrical charge;
- power supply means for charging the capacitor means;
- sensing means operatively coupled to a sensing electrode adapted to be implanted within the human patient for sensing a cardiac arrhythmia in the human patient;
- and
- means for selectively controlling an electrical discharge of the electrical charge stored in the capacitor means through at least two discharge electrodes adapted to be implanted within the human patient in response to the cardiac arrhythmia, the means for selectively controlling the electrical discharge including a pulse-shaping means for deriving a substantially rectangular-shaped voltage-versus-time waveform measured across the at least two discharge electrodes from the electrical discharge.
A method for operating an implantable defibrillator comprised of an implantable housing adapted for implantation into a human patient and containing a capacitor system for storing an electrical charge, a power supply for charging the capacitor system, a sensing system operatively coupled to a sensing electrode adapted to be implanted within the human patient for sensing a cardiac arrhythmia in the human patient, and a control system for selectively controlling an electrical discharge of the electrical charge stored in the capacitor means through at least two discharge electrodes adapted to be implanted within the human patient in response to the cardiac arrhythmia, the method comprising the steps of:
- (a) electrically configuring the at least two discharge electrodes in series with a current limiter, the current limiter having a minimum characteristic current;
- and
- (b) in response to a cardiac arrhythmia, charging the capacitor system to a pre-selected initial voltage and discharging the capacitor system through the at least two discharge electrodes and the current limiter such that a substantially rectangular-shaped voltage-versus-time waveform is provided as measured across the at least two discharge electrodes.
