Abstract
A novel apparatus for optically interconnecting integrated circuits that reduces optical path alignment difficulties and enhances signal quality. The present invention employs one or more holographic optical elements adapted for directing one or more modulated beams of light. Because each holographic optical element is individually aligned with a respective photonic device, the present invention is free from registration run off that is associated with large dimension optical substrates employed in previous optical interconnect schemes. Accordingly, optical path alignment between transmitting photonic devices and receiving photonic devices is preserved.

An optoelectronic apparatus comprising:
- a conductor for receiving an electrical drive signal from a first integrated circuit;
- an optoelectronic transmitter including a first photonic device for generating a beam of light coupled to the conductor, for modulating an emitted beam of light in response to the electrical drive signal and for emitting the beam of light in a direction along an optical path;
- an optoelectronic receiver, optically coupled to the transmitter, for receiving of light, the receiver including:
- a second photonic device for generating an electrical signal responsive to the modulated beam of light;
- and
- an etched holographic beam steerer, individually aligned and contiguous with the second photonic device, for redirecting the path of the light beam into the second photonic device;
- and
- another conductor, coupled to the optoelectronic receiver, for conducting the responsive electrical signal to a second integrated circuit.

- a first etched hologram individually aligned and contiguous with the first photonic device for directing the beam of light along an optical path;
- a second photonic device optically coupled to the first photonic device for receiving the beam of light;
- and a second etched hologram individually aligned and contiguous with the second photonic device for redirecting the beam of light into the second photonic device.
