Abstract
The invention relates to polymeric quaternary ammonium compounds which are useful as disinfectants and/or preservatives in ophthalmic compositions.

A method of disinfecting a contact lens, comprising contacting a contact lens with a composition comprising an ophthalmically acceptable vehicle and a disinfecting amount of a substantially pure form of a polymeric quaternary ammonium compound of structure:
- W--CH.sub.2 CH=CHCH.sub.2 - N.sup.+ (CH.sub.3).sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH=CHCH.sub.2 !.sub.n --W nX.sup.-
- wherein:
- W=N(CH.sub.3).sub.2 ;
- X is a pharmaceutically acceptable anion;
- and
- n is an integer from 16 to 32.

An ophthalmic composition comprising an ophthalmically acceptable vehicle and a disinfecting amount of a substantially pure form of a polymeric quaternary ammonium compound of structure:
- ##STR2## wherein:
- W=N(CH.sub.3).sub.2 ;

- and
- n is an integer from 16 to 32.
