A sintered silicon nitride ceramic comprising between about 0.6 mol % and about 3.2 mol % rare earth as rare earth oxide, said ceramic having a first rare earth disilicate phase and a second rare earth disilicate phase, wherein the first rare earth disilicate phase comprises samaria and the second rare earth disilicate phase comprises ytterbia.
