Abstract
A method for ultra-analysis of water for trace impurities. An effective trapping media functions by binding gels that carry ultratrace analytes on their surfaces.
Claims18
A method for analyzing water for the presence of an analyte in the presence of colloids, comprising the steps of:
- (1) exposing micorporous, inorganic trapping media having internal surfaces which bear active, hydrated hydroxyl groups thereon to a measured volume of continuously flowing non-saline water under alkaline conditions containing metal colloids and an analyte entrained therein at ultra trace levels being a concentration of less than one part per billion,
- (2) allowing said, hydrated hydroxyl groups to immobilize said colloids on said surfaces to progressively accumulate a coating of colloids as a gel through the release of hydronium/hydrogen ions, until a measurable quantity of analytes is deposited within the trapping media;
- and
- (3) analyzing said trapping media to determine the identity and quantity of analyte therein.

A method for analyzing water for the presence of an analyte in the presence of colloids, comprising the steps of:
- (1) preparing microporous, inorganic trapping media having internal surfaces to provide active, hydrated hydroxyl groups thereon by impregnating the media with an aqueous metal hydroxide solution;
- (2) exposing said media to a measured volume of continuously flowing non-saline water under alkaline conditions containing metal colloids and an analyte entrained therein;
- (3) allowing said, hydrated hydroxyl groups to immobilize said colloids on said surfaces to progressively accumulate a coating of colloids as a gel through the release of hydronium/hydrogen ions until a measurable quantity of analytes is deposited within the trapping media;
- and
- (4) analyzing said trapping media to determine the identity and quantity of analyte therein.
