Abstract
The present invention provides compounds of formula II ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1a is --H or --OR.sup.7 in which R.sup.7 is a hydroxy protecting group; R.sup.2a is --H, halo, or --OR.sup.8 in which R.sup.8 is a hydroxy protecting group, providing when Z is --S--, R.sup.2a is not halo; R.sup.6 is --H or a hydroxy protecting group which can be selectively removed; and Z is --O-- or --S--; or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, which are useful intermediates for the preparation of biologically active compounds.

A compound of formula II ##STR66## wherein R.sup.1a is --H or --OR.sup.7 in which R.sup.7 is a hydroxy protecting group;
- R.sup.2a is --H, halo, or --OR.sup.8 in which R.sup.8 is a hydroxy protecting group, providing when Z is --S--, R.sup.2a is not halo;
- R.sup.6 is --H or a hydroxy protecting group which can be selectively removed;
- and
- Z is --O-- or --S--;
- or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
