Abstract
Indole alkaloid compounds having the formula ##STR1## where R and R' are H, an alkyl group having up to 5 carbon atoms or --CO--(CH.sub.2).sub.n --CH.sub.3 where n=0 to 16. The indole alkaloid compounds and their reduction products are useful as both UV protective and anti-inflammatory agents.

An indole alkaloid compound having the formula ##STR5## where R and R' are H.
A pharmaceutical preparation comprising:
- an indole alkaloid compound having the formula ##STR6## where R and R' are H;
- and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier for said compound.
A method for treating the skin of a mammal to provide UV protection for the skin of said mammal, said method comprising the step of administering to the skin of said mammal a UV protective amount of an indole alkaloid having the formula:
- ##STR7## where R and R' are H.
