Abstract
A rod or piston seal with a seal body made of a polymeric material, which contacts the surface that is being sealed and is capable of relative displacement with a sealing surface. The sealing surface is interrupted in the movement direction by at least two grooves, extending in the peripheral direction, that have a spacing between them. The spacing consists of at least one land that extends in the axial direction between the mutually adjacent grooves, such that the ratio A between the width of the land and the width of the grooves in the movement direction is 1:2 to 200:1, the ratio B between the width and depth of the grooves is 10:1 to 1:5, and the depth of the grooves has a value of 1 to 200 .mu.m.
Claims14
A seal comprising:
- a seal body, made of a polymeric material, said seal body comprising a sealing surface interrupted by at least two grooves extending in a peripheral direction, said grooves having a spacing between them, wherein said spacing comprises at least one land extending in an axial direction between adjacent grooves, and wherein a first ratio between a width of said land and a width of at least one of said grooves is 1:2 to 200:1, and wherein a second ratio between a width and a depth of said grooves is 10:1 to 1:5, and wherein said depth of said grooves is between 1 and 200 .mu.m.
A seal comprising:
- a seal body, made of a polymeric material, said seal body comprising a sealing surface interrupted by at least two grooves extending in a peripheral direction, said grooves having a spacing between them, wherein said spacing comprises at least one land extending in an axial direction between adjacent grooves, and wherein a first ratio between a width of said land and a width of at least one of said grooves is 1.5:1 to 30:1, and wherein a second ratio between a width and a depth of said grooves is 2.1:1 to 3.8:1, and wherein said depth of said grooves is between 7 and 35 .mu.m .
A seal comprising:
- a seal body s made of a polymeric material, said seal body comprising a sealing surface interrupted by at least two grooves extending in a peripheral direction, said grooves having a spacing between them, wherein said spacing comprises at least one land extending in an axial direction between adjacent grooves, and wherein a first ratio between a width of said land and a width of at least one of said grooves is 1:2 to 200:1, and wherein a second ratio between a width and a depth of said grooves is 10:1 to 1:5, and wherein said depth of said grooves is between 1 and 200 .mu.m, wherein said land encloses, as manufactured, an angle with a surface capable of relative displacement to said sealing surface that is 2 to 5 degrees, and wherein said angle is open toward a space being sealed.
A seal comprising:
- a seal body, made of a polymeric material, said seal body comprising a sealing surface interrupted by at least two grooves extending in a peripheral direction, said grooves having a spacing between them, wherein said spacing comprises at least one land extending in an axial direction between adjacent grooves, and wherein a first ratio between a width of said land and a width of at least one of said grooves is 1:2 to 200:1, and wherein a second ratio between a width and a depth of said grooves is 10:1 to 1:5, and wherein said depth of said grooves is between 1 and 200 .mu.m, and wherein said grooves have a substantially trapezoidal profile and wherein axial delimiting surfaces of said trapezoidal profile enclose an angle of 50 to 70 degrees with a surface being sealed.
