## Abstract

The invention relates to compounds represented by formula 1a or 1b ##STR1## and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.8, R.sub.9, and n are as described herein. These compounds are useful as agents in treating herpes virus infections.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A compound represented by formula 2 ##STR72## and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof wherein R.sub.1 equals H, (C.sub.2 -C.sub.8)alkanoyl, ##STR73## or -CH.sub.2 O-(C.sub.2 -C.sub.8)alkanoyl R.sub.2 is H, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.8)alkyl, (C.sub.2 -C.sub.8)alkanoyl, -(C.sub.2 -C.sub.6)alkylene, -(CHR.sub.4).sub.S -N(R.sub.5).sub.2, -(CHR.sub.4).sub.S -CO.sub.2 M, ##STR74## R.sub.3 is OR.sub.5, F, Cl, Br, I, CF.sub.3 or, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.8)alkyl; R.sub.4 is H or (C.sub.1 -C.sub.8)alkyl;
R.sub.5 is H, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.8)alkyl or (C.sub.2 -C.sub.8)alkanoyl;
R.sub.6 is R.sub.3, N(R.sub.5).sub.2, (C.sub.2 -C.sub.7)alkanoyl or H;
R.sub.9 is (C.sub.1 -C.sub.8)alkyl;
M is H or a pharmaceutically acceptable cation;
q is 2 or 3;
s is 1, 2, 3, or 4; and
t is 0, 1, 2, or 3; and
when R.sub.1 is H, R.sub.3 is not methyl.

A compound of claim 1 wherein R.sub.3 is 6-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.8)alkyl-O-.

A compound of claim 1 wherein R.sub.3 is 6-CH.sub.3 -O-.

A compound of claim 1 wherein R.sub.2 is ##STR75## R.sub.1 is H or ##STR76## and n is o.

A compound of claim 1 wherein in formula 2, R.sub.3 is 6-CH.sub.3 O and R.sub.2 is ##STR77##

A compound of claim 1 wherein in formula 2, R.sub.9 is CH.sub.3.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The compound according to claim 1 of the formula ##STR78## or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.

The compound according to claim 1, of the formula ##STR79## or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

A pharmaceutical composition for treating patients afflicted with a herpes group virus which comprises an anti-herpes effective amount of a compound of formula 2 of claim 1 and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier therefor.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

A method of treating a patient afflicted with a herpes group virus which comprises administering to said patient an anti-herpes effective amount of a compound of formula 2 of claim 1.

### Claim 11

A compound of the formula ##STR80## wherein R.sub.50 is the residue of a naturally occuring .alpha.-amino acid, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
