Abstract
There are disclosed improvements in multicomponent composite metal membranes useful for the separation of hydrogen, the improvements comprising the provision of a flexible porous intermediate layer between a support layer and a nonporous hydrogen-permeable coating metal layer, and the provision of a textured coating metal layer.
Claims34
A composite hydrogen separation element comprising, after fabrication, a nonporous hydrogen-permeable coating metal layer supported by a rigid support matrix, a flexible, porous, non-sintered, non-metallic intermediate layer between said coating metal layer and said support matrix, wherein, at a temperature of from about 200.degree. C. to about 1000.degree. C.,
- said intermediate layer does not chemically react with hydrogen or with said coating metal layer or with said support matrix to form a hydrogen-impermeable layer, and said support matrix does not react with hydrogen or with said intermediate layer to substantially reduce the tensile strength of said support matrix.
A composite hydrogen separation element comprising, after fabrication, a nonporous hydrogen-permeable textured coating metal layer, said coating metal layer supported by a rigid support matrix, and a porous, non-metallic intermediate layer between said textured coating metal layer and said support matrix, wherein, at a temperature of from about 200.degree. C. to about 1000.degree. C.,
- said intermediate layer does not chemically react with hydrogen or with said textured coating metal layer or with said support matrix to form a hydrogen-impermeable layer, and said support matrix does not react with hydrogen or with said intermediate layer to substantially reduce the tensile strength of said support matrix.
A hydrogen separation module comprising a housing that has a feed inlet, a permeate outlet, a raffinate outlet and at least one hydrogen separation element which, after fabrication, comprises a nonporous hydrogen-permeable coating metal layer supported by a rigid ceramic, carbon, or metal support matrix, and a flexible porous intermediate layer between said coating metal layer and said support matrix, wherein, at a temperature of from about 200.degree. C. to about 1000.degree. C.,
- said intermediate layer does not chemically react with hydrogen or with said coating metal layer or with said support matrix to form a hydrogen-impermeable layer, and said support matrix does not react with hydrogen or with said intermediate layer to substantially reduce the tensile strength of said support matrix.
A hydrogen separation module comprising a housing that has a feed inlet, a permeate outlet, a raffinate outlet and at least one hydrogen separation element comprising, after fabrication, a nonporous hydrogen-permeable textured coating metal layer, said coating metal layer supported by a rigid support matrix, and a porous, non-metallic intermediate layer between said textured coating metal layer and said support matrix, wherein, at a temperature of from about 200.degree. C. to about 1000.degree. C.,
- said intermediate layer does not chemically react with hydrogen or with said textured coating metal layer or with said support matrix to form a hydrogen-impermeable layer, and said support matrix does not react with hydrogen or with said intermediate layer to substantially reduce the tensile strength of said support matrix.
