Abstract
Chitosan absorbent is prepared by reacting pulverized chitosan suspended as a powder in an organic solvent with an acid and then isolating solid chitosan-acid reaction product.
Claims12
A method of preparing a chitosan super-absorbent comprising:
- reacting pulverized chitosan suspended as a powder in an organic solvent with an acid, wherein water is present in an amount of 1-80%, based on the amount of chitosan, and wherein the water content is present in a maximum amount of about 10% by weight based on the weight of the organic solvent;
- and
- isolating the solid super-absorbent chitosan-acid reaction product.
A method of absorbing aqueous media, comprising:
- contacting an aqueous medium with the reaction product of chitosan with an acid prepared by reacting pulverized chitosan suspended as a powder in an organic solvent with an acid, wherein water is present in an amount of 1-80%, based on the amount of chitosan, and wherein the water content is present in a maximum amount of about 10% by weight based on the weight of the organic solvent;
- and isolating the solid chitosan-acid reaction product.
