Abstract
Novel fumarate- and fumaramide-containing monomers are disclosed which are especially useful in the preparation of biocompatible devices, especially contact lenses.
Claims12
A contact lens produced from a monomer mix comprising
- a) at least one fumarate-containing or fumaramide-containing monomer having the following schematic representations:
- ##STR9## wherein ##STR10## X.sub.1, X.sub.2, Y.sub.1 and Y.sub.2 are independently O or NR.sub.4, except that when G is siloxane-containing, X.sub.1 and X.sub.2 must be NR.sub.4 ;
- Z.sub.1 and Z.sub.2 are independently OR.sub.3 or NR.sub.4 R.sub.5 ;
- R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are independently H or an alkyl group having 1 to 10 C atoms;
- R.sub.6, R.sub.7, R.sub.8, R.sub.9, R.sub.10 and R.sub.11 are independently hydrogen or an alkyl-containing group having 1 to 10 C atoms, or fluoroalkyl-containing group having 1 to 10 C atoms;
- R.sub.12, R.sub.13 and R.sub.14 are independently methyl, trimethylsiloxy or pentamethyldisiloxanyloxy;
- m is 1 to 10;
- n is 5 to 100;
- b) at least one hydrophilic monomer.

A monomer mix comprising
- a) at least one fumarate-containing or fumaramide-containing monomer having the following schematic representations:
- ##STR11## wherein ##STR12## X.sub.1, X.sub.2, Y.sub.1 and Y.sub.2 are independently O or NR.sub.4, except that when G is siloxane-containing, X.sub.1 and X.sub.2 must be NR.sub.4 ;
- Z.sub.1 and Z.sub.2 are independently OR.sub.3 or NR.sub.4 R.sub.5 ;
- R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are independently H or an alkyl group having 1 to 10 C atoms;
- R.sub.6, R.sub.7, R.sub.8, R.sub.9, R.sub.10 and R.sub.11 are independently hydrogen or an alkyl-containing group having 1 to 10 C atoms, or fluoroalkyl-containing group having 1 to 10 C atoms;
- R.sub.12, R.sub.13 and R.sub.14 are independently methyl, trimethylsiloxy or pentamethyldisiloxanyloxy;
- m is 1 to 10;
- n is 5 to 100;
- b) at least one hydrophilic monomer;
- c) at least one initiator:
- wherein said mix is cured using a combination of thermal and UV energy.
