Magnetic recording medium

A magnetic recording medium comprising a non-magnetic support having a lower magnetic layer and an uppermost magnetic layer provided on a surface of said support in said respective order,

• wherein said lower magnetic layer comprises
• a vinyl chloride copolymer containing a member selected from the group consisting of a --SO.sub.3 M group, a --COOM group and a --PO(OM').sub.2 group, in which M is hydrogen or an alkali metal and M' is an alkali metal or a hydrocarbon radical,
• a first magnetic material comprising a first magnetic iron oxide in which the atomic number ratio of a divalent iron component Fe.sup.2+ to a trivalent iron component Fe.sup.3+ is
• 0.13.ltoreq.Fe.sup.2+ /Fe.sup.3+ .ltoreq.0.45, and
• a lubricant;
• wherein said uppermost magnetic layer comprises
• a vinyl chloride copolymer containing a member selected from the group consisting of a --SO.sub.3 M group, a --COOM group and a --PO(OM').sub.2 group, in which M is hydrogen or an alkali metal and M' is an alkali metal or a hydrocarbon radical,
• a second magnetic material comprising a second magnetic iron oxide in which the atomic number ratio of a divalent iron component Fe.sup.2+ to a trivalent iron component Fe.sup.3+ is
• 0. 001.ltoreq.Fe.sup.2+ /Fe.sup.3+ .ltoreq.0.1, and
• a lubricant;
• and
• wherein said non-magnetic support has from 100,000/mm.sup.2 to 4,000,000/mm.sup.2 of protuberances on a surface opposite to the surface on which said lower and uppermost magnetic layers are provided.
