Abstract
Novel superconducting materials in the form of compounds, structures or phases are formed by performing otherwise known syntheses in a highly oxidizing atmosphere rather than that created by molecular oxygen at atmospheric pressure or below. This leads to the successful synthesis of novel superconducting compounds which are thermodynamically stable at the conditions under which they are formed.
Claims9
A method for producing a high temperature superconductor oxide comprising the steps of:
- mixing powdered oxides of barium and copper and a third metal, and
- heating said mixture to at least 200.degree. C. in an environment having an oxidizing potential greater than that of molecular oxygen at about two atmospheres, said heating step causing a reaction in which a high temperature superconductor oxide is formed.
The method of 6, further comprising said heating for a sufficient period of time for oxygen atoms to reach thermodynamic equilibrium throughout said mixture.
