Abstract
An apparatus and method for gas backwashing a granular media supported upon a lateral underdrain is disclosed. The lateral underdrain includes a plurality of dispersion apertures therethrough and at least one liquid return conduit extending to a discharge at a level below the dispersion apertures. The present invention provides for equal distribution of backwash gas across the entire lateral underdrain by directing backwash gas through the dispersion apertures into the granular media and directing liquid from the granular media through the liquid return conduit without obstructing backwash gas flow through said apertures from a gas pocket formed underneath said apertures.
Claims22
In a filtration system having a filter bottom and an underdrain distributor positioned on said filter bottom. a granular filtration media disposed above said underdrain distributor, means for passing liquid downwardly through said granular media to the underdrain distributor in a filtration mode, and a backwash gas inlet for introducing gas to said underdrain distributor to pass upwardly through the granular media in a gas-only backwash mode. said underdrain distributor including:
- a plurality of walls defining a hollow interior, said walls including a top wall and a pair of sidewalls extending between said top wall and said filter bottom;
- and
- said top wall having a plurality of uniformly sized, coplanar non-clog dispersion apertures providing fluid communication between said hollow interior and a distributor exterior, said dispersion apertures sized and spaced so that all of said apertures may selectively disperse liquid-only backwash, concurrent backwash and gas-only backwash, providing sufficient headloss for establishing a gas pocket under said top wall during gas-only backwashing;
- the improvement comprising:
- at least one liquid return conduit in said distributor providing fluid communication between said hollow interior and the distributor exterior, said liquid return conduit including a discharge within said hollow interior at a level below said plurality of apertures, said discharge positioned so that liquid which is exterior to said gas pocket may return to said distributor interior without significantly obstructing the flow of upward passing backwash gas during gas-only backwash.
A block for use in draining and backwashing a filter bed of the type where liquid may be supplied to the filter bed and passed down through the filter bed to an underdrain system including said block, said block comprising:
- a plurality of exterior walls defining a hollow interior, said exterior walls including a top wall, a bottom wall and a pair of sidewalls extending between said top wall and said bottom wall;
- said top wall having a plurality of uniformly sized, coplanar non-clog dispersion apertures providing communication between said hollow interior and an exterior of said block, all of the dispersion apertures in said top wall being sized and spaced to selectively disperse gas-only backwash, concurrent gas/liquid backwash and liquid-only backwash;
- said dispersion apertures sized and spaced so that a gas pocket may be formed directly below each of the dispersion apertures in said top wall during gas-only backwash;
- and
- at least one liquid return conduit in said block providing fluid communication between said hollow interior and said block exterior, said liquid return conduit having an inlet positioned at or below the level of said top wall and a discharge at a level within said hollow interior below said apertures, said discharge positioned so that liquid exterior to said gas pocket may return to said block interior without significantly obstructing gas backwash during gas-only backwash.
A method of backwashing a granular media disposed above a lateral underdrain, said underdrain including a plurality of apertures therethrough and at least one liquid return conduit extending to a discharge in an interior of said underdrain at a level below said apertures, said underdrain and said granular media being submerged in a process liquid, said method comprising the steps of:
- a) supplying a backwash gas to said underdrain so that a backwash gas pocket is formed between said apertures and said liquid return conduit discharge;
- b) directing said backwash gas through said apertures and into said granular media;
- and
- c) directing liquid which is exterior to said gas pocket through said liquid return conduit to said liquid return conduit discharge without significantly obstructing the flow of said backwash gas into said granular media.
A block for use in draining and backwashing a filter bed of the type where liquid may be supplied to the filter bed and passed down through the filter bed to an underdrain system including said block, said block comprising:
- a plurality of exterior walls defining a hollow interior, said exterior walls including a top wall, a bottom wall and a pair of sidewalls extending between said top wall and said bottom wall;
- said top wall having a plurality of uniformly sized, coplanar non-clog dispersion apertures providing communication between said hollow interior and an exterior of said block, all of the dispersion apertures in said top wall being sized and spaced to selectively disperse gas-only backwash, concurrent gas/liquid backwash and liquid-only backwash;
- said dispersion apertures sized and spaced so that a gas pocket may be formed directly below each of the dispersion apertures in said top wall during gas-only backwash;
- a longitudinal trough in said block with a plurality of liquid return conduits spaced along said trough in a lower portion of said trough, each liquid return conduit providing fluid communication between said hollow interior and said block exterior, each liquid return conduit having a discharge at a level within said hollow interior below said apertures, said discharge positioned so that liquid exterior to said gas pocket may return to said block interior without significantly obstructing said gas backwash during gas-only backwash;
- and
- at least one liquid return conduit in said block providing fluid communication between said hollow interior and said block exterior, said liquid return conduit having a discharge at a level within said hollow interior below said apertures so that liquid exterior to said gas pocket may return to said block interior without significantly obstructing gas backwash during gas-only backwash.
A block for use in draining and backwashing a filter bed of the type where liquid may be supplied to the filter bed and passed down through the filter bed to an underdrain system including said block, said block comprising:
- a plurality of exterior walls defining a hollow interior, said exterior walls including a top wall, a bottom wall and a pair of sidewalls extending between said top wall and said bottom wall;
- said top wall having a plurality of uniformly sized, coplanar non-clog dispersion apertures providing communication between said hollow interior and an exterior of said block, all of the dispersion apertures in said top wall being sized and spaced to selectively disperse gas-only backwash, concurrent gas/liquid backwash and liquid-only backwash;
- said dispersion apertures sized and spaced so that a gas pocket may be formed directly below each of the dispersion apertures in said top wall during gas-only backwash;
- at least one liquid return conduit in said block providing fluid communication between said hollow interior and said block exterior, said liquid return conduit having a discharge at a level within said hollow interior below said apertures so that liquid exterior to said gas pocket may return to said block interior without significantly obstructing gas backwash during gas-only backwash;
- and
- a plurality of partitions extending transversely along said block, said partitions compartmentalizing said dispersion apertures and said liquid return conduits.
