Abstract
There are disclosed novel dihydrobenzofuran derivatives of the formula: ##STR1## wherein X, Y, Z and R.sup.2 are each as defined in the description. Also disclosed are a herbicidal composition containing a herbicidally effective amount of the compound (I) as an active ingredient and a method for exterminating unfavorable weeds by applying a herbicidally effective amount of the compound (I) to an area where the unfavorable weeds grow or will grow.

A compound of the formula:
- ##STR7## wherein X is hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine or bromine;
- Y is methyl optionally substituted with one or more halogen atoms;
- Z is methyl or amino;
- and R.sup.2 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 hydroxyalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkoxy(C.sub.1 -C.sub.6)alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkoxy(C.sub.1 -C.sub.6)alkoxy-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.6)-alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.7 acyloxy(C.sub.1 -C.sub.6)alkyl, carboxyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkoxycarbonyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 haloalkoxycarbonyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 cycloalkoxycarbonyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkynyloxycarbonyl, aminocarbonyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkylaminocarbonyl or phenylaminocarbonyl having a phenyl group optionally substituted with C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 haloalkoxy, halogen, nitro, cyano or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkylthio.

- ##STR8## wherein X is hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine or bromine;
- Y is methyl optionally substituted with one or more halogen atoms;
- Z is methyl or amino;
- and R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are the same or different and are hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl with the proviso that the total number of carbon atoms in the R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 is not greater than 6.

- Z is methyl or amino;
- and R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are the same or different and are hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl with the proviso that the total number of carbon atoms in the R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 is not greater than 6.
