Abstract
The present invention provides novel HIV protease inhibitors, pharmaceutical formulations containing those compounds and methods of treating and/or preventing HIV infection and/or AIDS.

A compound of formula I ##STR18## wherein:
- R is formyl or C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkanoyl;
- R.sup.1 is naphthyl;
- q is 0;
- R.sup.2 is --CH.sub.2 -C(O)NH.sub.2, or --CH(CH.sub.3).sub.2 ;
- X is ##STR19## Y is phenyl;
- R.sup.3a is --C(O)-NR.sup.4 R.sup.4 where R.sup.4 is independently and at each occurrence hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl;
- or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
