A method for optical resolution of quinolinemevalonic acid ((.+-.)I), which comprises reacting the quinolinemevalonic acid of the formula ((.+-.)I) with D(+) phenethylamine of the formula ((+)II), and separating the resulting diastereomer salt of optically active quinolinemevalonic acid of the formula ((-)I.(+)II):
