Abstract
The present invention relates to a process for removing carbonyl sulfide from a liquid hydrocarbon feedstock, said process comprising the steps of (a) passing said hydrocarbon feedstock over an absorbent material comprising nickel deposited on a support material wherein nickel is present as both nickel oxide and metallic nickel and wherein the absorbent material has been conditioned by passing an inert gas flow containing a minor amount of propylene; and (b) recovering a liquid hydrocarbon stream having substantially reduced carbonyl sulfide content.

A process for removing carbonyl-sulfide from a hydrocarbon feedstock comprising:
- (a) passing said hydrocarbon feedstock containing carbonyl sulfide as a contaminant over an absorbent material comprising nickel deposited on a support material, said nickel being present in said absorbent material as being both nickel oxide and metallic nickel;
- (b) selectively absorbing carbonyl sulfide from said feedstock on to said absorbent material by an amount sufficient to reduce the carbonyl sulfide content of said hydrocarbon stream to a concentration no greater than 50 ppb;
- and
- (c) recovering a hydrocarbon stream of reduced carbonyl sulfide from said absorbent material;
- wherein said absorbent material is in finely divided form.
A process for removing carbonyl-sulfide from a hydrocarbon feedstock containing liquid propylene comprising:
- (a) passing hydrocarbon feedstock containing liquid propylene and carbonyl sulfide over an absorbent material comprising nickel deposited on a support material selected from the group consisting of a silica, silica-alumina, alumina, kieselguhr, and combinations thereof wherein said nickel is present as metallic nickel and nickel oxide with nickel oxide comprising about 35-70 wt. % of said nickel;
- (b) selectively absorbing carbonyl sulfide from said feedstock in an amount sufficient to reduce the carbonyl sulfide concentration of said feedstock to a concentration not exceeding 50 ppb;
- and
- (c) recovering a hydrocarbon stream of reduced carbonyl sulfide content from said absorbent material;
- wherein said absorbent material is in finely divided form.
A process for removing carbonyl-sulfide from a liquid propylene feedstock, comprising:
- (a) passing the propylene feedstock at a temperature within the range of about 0.degree. C.-90.degree. C. and under sufficient pressure to retain the propylene feed stock in a liquid phase above an absorbent material comprising from about 40-70 wt. % nickel deposited on a support selected from the group consisting alumina silica kieselguhr, silica-alumina, and combinations thereof, wherein the nickel comprises from about 35-70 wt. % of metallic nickel and from about 30 to about 65 wt. % nickel oxide and at a liquid hourly space velocity sufficient to reduce the carbonyl sulfide concentration to a level not exceeding 50 parts per billion by weight;
- (b) selectively absorbing carbonyl sulfide from said feedstock in an amount sufficient to reduce the carbonyl sulfide concentration of said feedstock to a concentration not exceeding 50 ppb;
- and
- (c) recovering propylene feedstock of reduced carbonyl sulfide from said absorbent material wherein said absorbent material is in finely divided form.
A process of removing carbon oxysulfide or carbonyl sulfide from an olefin polymerization feedstock employing an absorbent material for said contaminant and which reacts exothermically in absorption of a polymerizable olefin component of said feedstock comprising the steps of:
- (a) passing an inert gas containing a minor amount of said olefin component over the absorbent material in order to condition the absorbent material to alleviate an excess temperature increase during the processing of said feedstock;
- (b) thereafter passing said feedstock containing said olefin component in a concentration substantially greater than the concentration of said olefin component in the inert gas over the conditioned absorbent material to selectively absorb said contaminant on said absorbent material;
- (c) recovering an olefin component containing stream having a substantially reduced contaminant concentration from said absorbent material;
- and
- (d) subsequently subjecting said olefin component in the stream of step (c) to polymerization in the presence of a polymerization catalyst.
