Abstract
An embossed paper laminate having two laminae. The laminae are embossed so that each embossed site of one lamina is adhesively joined to the nonembossed region of the other lamina. The laminate is made by two close tolerance pattern rolls juxtaposed to form a nip. Each pattern roll has radially extending protuberances which contact the periphery of the other pattern roll intermediate its protuberances. The laminae are fed through the nip in face-to-face relationship and are embossed and adhesively joined to the other lamina by the radially extending protuberances.
Claims6
An apparatus for manufacturing a dual laminae cellulosic fibrous structure, said apparatus comprising two pattern rolls juxtaposed in axially parallel relationship to form a nip therebetween, said pattern rolls being adapted to receive a cellulosic fibrous structure interposed therebetween, each of said pattern rolls comprising a plurality of radially oriented protuberances projecting from the periphery thereof, each protuberance having a distal end with a predetermined surface which flushly contacts the periphery of the other said pattern roll along said entire predetermined surface of said distal end of said protuberance prior to interposing a cellulosic fibrous structure therebetween, whereby a cellulosic fibrous structure interposed in the nip between said pattern rolls is in contacting relationship with the protuberances of a first said pattern roll and the periphery of the second said pattern roll, said protuberances of said first pattern roll compressing said cellulosic fibrous structure against said periphery of said second pattern roll.
A process for manufacturing a cellulosic fibrous structure having two laminae joined in face-to-face relationship, said process comprising the steps of:
- providing two laminae to be joined in face-to-face relationship;
- providing an apparatus having two pattern rolls, each with a periphery and radially oriented protuberances extending therefrom to distal ends, said pattern rolls juxtaposed in axially parallel relationship to form a first nip therebetween, said pattern rolls being adapted to receive a cellulosic fibrous structure interposed therebetween, the distal ends with a predetermined surface of the protuberances of each said pattern roll flushly contacting the periphery of the other said pattern roll along said entire predetermined surface of said distal end of said protuberance prior to interposing a cellulosic fibrous structure therebetween;
- and
- forwarding said laminae through said nip defined by said pattern rolls so that both laminae are compacted between the distal ends of the protuberances of one said pattern roll and the periphery of the other said pattern roll, whereby each said lamina is joined to and contacts the other said lamina at a plurality of sites coincident with the distal ends of said protuberances.
