Abstract
Unsubstituted or substituted halo nitro and nitroso compounds and their metabolites are potent, selective and non-toxic inhibitors and supressants of cancer growth and viral infections in a mammalian host. The compounds are particularly useful for treatment and supression of tumors and viruses associated with breast cancer, AIDS, herpetic episodes and cytomegaloviral infections. The methods of treatment of tumorigenic and viral diseases by halo nitro nitroso compounds and their metabolites are described.
Claims6
A compound of the structural formula:
- ##STR18## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, and R.sub.5 are, independent of one another, selected from the grop consisting of hydrogen, hydroxy, amino, nitro, iodo, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6) alkyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6) alkoxy, (C.sub.3 -C.sub.7) cycloalkyl, and phenyl and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, wherein at least two of the five R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, and R.sub.5 substituents are always hydrogen, at least one of the five substituents are always nitro, and at least one substituent positioned adjacent to a nitro is always iodo.
A pharmaceutical composition, said composition comprising a compound according to the formula:
- ##STR19## wherein R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, and R.sub.5 are, independent of one another, selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydroxy, amino, nitro, iodo, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6) alkyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6) alkoxy, (C.sub.3 -C.sub.7) cycloalkyl, and phenyl and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, wherein at least two of the five R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, and R.sub.5 substituents are always hydrogen and at least one of the five substituents are always nitro.
