Abstract
A brush assembly for an electric motor has a brush 20, a brush terminal 30 and a brush spring 40. The brush spring is fashioned from an elongate strip 41 of resilient, electrically conductive material and is fixed to the brush terminal at its ends to form a loop with an intermediate portion fixed to the brush to electrically connect the brush to the brush terminal and to urge the brush into contact with a commutator of the motor. Brush guiding arrangements for guiding the brush to the commutator has a guide pin 51 fixed at one end 52 to the brush terminal and co-operating with a guide hole 21 formed in the brush to define the position of the brush on the commutator 11.
Claims22
A brush assembly for an electric motor having a commutator, the assembly comprising:
- a brush;
- a brush terminal;
- a spring for urging the brush into contact with the commutator and electrically connecting the brush to the terminal;
- and
- brush guiding means including a guide pin cooperating with a guide hole for guiding the brush to the commutator.
A brush assembly for an electronic motor having a commutator, the assembly comprising:
- a carbon based brush having a commutator contact surface and a castellation disposed opposite to the commutator contact surface, the contact surface being V-shaped to provide two lines of contact with the commutator at circumferentially spaced locations and having a transverse channel passing through an apex of the V-shaped contact surface and dividing the brush into a first commutator contact portion and a second commutator contact portion and having a guide hole extending radially from the transverse channel;
- a plate-like brush terminal having four brush spring mounting posts, a guide pin boss, a projection having an edge and forming an external motor terminal and barbs formed on the edge of the projection for mounting the brush terminal in an end cap of the motor;
- a brush spring formed from an elongated strip of resilient electrically conductive material and having two bifurcated ends and an intermediate portion, the two bifurcated ends being fixed to the brush terminal by the four brush spring mounting posts to form a loop and the intermediate portion has a brush mounting hole with edge flaps which grip and retain the castellation formed on the brush to mount the brush to the spring and a latching finger arranged to latch onto the brush terminal to hold the spring in a retracted position and extending from the intermediate portion;
- and
- a guide pin rigidly mounted at one end in the guide pin boss and extending in use towards the commutator and being received to form a sliding fit within the guide hole in the brush to guide the brush towards the commutator.
A brush assembly for an electric motor having a commutator, the assembly comprising:
- a brush;
- a brush terminal;
- a spring for urging the brush into contact with the commutator and electrically connecting the brush to the brush terminal, the spring having a first end and a second end, the first end and the second end of the spring being connected to the brush terminal;
- and
- a brush guide for guiding the brush to a desired position on the commutator.
A brush assembly for an electric motor having a commutator, the assembly comprising:
- a brush;
- a brush terminal;
- a spring for urging the brush into contact with the commutator and electrically connecting the brush to the brush terminal, the spring having a first end and a second end, the first end and the second end each having a slot formed therein to form a first bifurcated end and a second bifurcated end;
- and
- a brush guide for guiding the brush to a desired position on the commutator.
A brush assembly for an electric motor having a commutator, the assembly comprising:
- a brush having a guide hole formed therein;
- a brush terminal;
- a leaf spring for urging the brush into contact with the commutator and electrically connecting the brush to the brush terminal;
- and
- a guide member received in the guide hole for guiding the brush to a desired position on the commutator;
- wherein
- the leaf spring is connected to the brush in such a manner that the leaf spring will impart only a force that is substantially parallel to the guide hole.
