Benzamide and sulfonamide hypoglycemic agents

A compound of the formula ##STR26## wherein:

• R.sup.0 is ##STR27## each R is hydrogen or methyl;
• A.sup.0 is methylene, ethylene or n-propylene;
• R.sup.1 is hydrogen or methyl;
• A.sup.1 is a carbonyl or sulfonyl moiety;
• Z is --CH--;
• R.sup.3 C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, halo, hydroxy, amino, trifluoromethyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkylamino, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 dialkylamino, nitro, cyano, carboxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxycarbonyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy;
• n is 0, 1, 2 or 3;
• R.sup.2 is hydrogen or methyl;
• A.sup.2 is a carbonyl or sulfonyl moiety;
• B.sup.1 is ##STR28## R.sup.4 is hydrogen or halo;
• R.sup.5 is hydrogen, 1,1-dimethylethyl or trifluoromethyl;
• R.sup.6 is hydrogen, halo or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl;
• with the provisos that:
• i. at least one of R.sup.4, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 must be other than hydrogen;
• ii. when R.sup.5 is trifluoromethyl, R.sup.4 and R.sup.6 are hydrogen and R.sup.0 is ##STR29## then A.sup.2 must be a sulfonyl moiety;
• iii. when R.sup.5 is trifluoromethyl, R.sup.4 and R.sup.6 are hydrogen and R.sup.0 is ##STR30## then A.sup.1 must be a carbonyl moiety;
• iv. when R.sup.6 is fluoro, bromo or iodo, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are hydrogen and R.sup.0 is ##STR31## then A.sup.2 must be a carbonyl moiety;
• v. R.sup.6 is chloro, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are hydrogen and R.sup.0 is ##STR32## then A.sup.2 must be a carbonyl moietyl and A.sup.1 must be a sulfonyl moiety;
• vi. when R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are hydrogen and R.sup.0 is ##STR33## then R.sup.6 must be other than chloro;
• vii. when R.sup.6 is halo, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are hydrogen and R.sup.0 is ##STR34## then at least one of A.sup.1 or A.sup.2 must be a sulfonyl moiety;
• viii. when B.sup.1 is ##STR35## then at least one of A.sup.1 or A.sup.2 must be a sulfonyl moiety;
• or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
