Abstract
An improved process for reducing the amount of at least the glycol ether byproducts formed in a process for making unsubstituted ethanolamines from the reaction of ethylene oxide and ammonia or in a process for making substituted ethanolamines via the reaction of ethylene oxide and a substituted amine, wherein carbon dioxide or a material which will evolve carbon dioxide is fed to a reactor for making the unsubstituted or substituted ethanolamine.
Claims9
In a process and under conditions for making an unsubstituted ethanolamine from the reaction of ethylene oxide and ammonia wherein undesirable glycol ether byproducts are formed, or in a process and under conditions for making a substituted ethanolamine by the reaction of ethylene oxide and a substituted amine wherein said undesirable glycol ether byproducts are likewise formed, the improvement which comprises feeding carbon dioxide or a material which will evolve carbon dioxide to a reactor wherein such unsubstituted or substituted ethanolamine is prepared.
