Abstract
The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of N-ethylcarbazole by reaction of carbazole or N-ethoxycarbonylcarbazole with diethyl carbonate.

Process for the preparation of N-ethylcarbazole of file formula I, comprising reacting a carbazole of the general formula II ##STR5## in which R denotes hydrogen or ethoxycarbonyl, with diethyl carbonate.
