Abstract
A composition for inhibiting corrosion. The composition contains a mixture of a dessicant and a vapor-corrosion inhibitor. The mixture of dessicant and inhibitor is synergistic: the service life of the corrosion inhibitor is significantly longer when so used than when used alone or in in the presence of but not physically mixed with the dessicant.

A method for extending the service life of a vapor-corrosion inhibitor used in an enclosure containing ambient air and metal components, for protecting the metal components from corrosion caused by ambient water vapor, the method comprising the steps of:
- (a) preparing a granular composition for inhibiting corrosion caused by water vapor in the ambient air, by mixing a granular vapor-corrosion inhibitor with a granular dessicant which gels upon exposure to the water vapor in the ambient air, thereby transforming the granular composition into a gelatinous mass and slowing the rate of diffusion of vapor from the vapor-corrosion inhibitor;
- (b) sealing the granular composition in a solid film that is permeable to water vapor and to the vapor of the vapor-corrosion inhibitor;
- and
- (c) disposing the sealed granular composition in the enclosure containing the ambient air and the metal components, thereby transforming the granular composition into a gelatinous mass as the granular composition is exposed to the ambient water vapor, slowing the rate of diffusion of the vapor from the vapor-corrosion inhibitor, and prolonging the useful life of the vapor-corrosion inhibitor;
- the dessicant being selected from the group consisting of potassium poly(acrylate) and the partial sodium salt of crosslinked poly(propenoic acid).
A method for extending the service life of a vapor-corrosion inhibitor used in an enclosure containing ambient air and metal components, for protecting the metal components from corrosion caused by ambient water vapor, the method comprising the steps of:
- (a) preparing a granular composition for inhibiting corrosion caused by water vapor in the ambient air, by mixing a granular vapor-corrosion inhibitor with a granular dessicant comprising an alkali-metal salt of poly(acrylic acid), thereby forming a granular composition which upon exposure to water vapor is transformed into a gelatinous mass;
- (b) sealing the granular composition in a solid film that is permeable to water vapor and to the vapor of the vapor-corrosion inhibitor;
- and
- (c) disposing the sealed granular composition in the enclosure containing the ambient air and the metal components, thereby transforming the granular composition into a gelatinous mass as the composition is exposed to the ambient water vapor, slowing the rate of diffusion or the vapor from the vapor-corrosion inhibitor, and prolonging the useful life of the vapor-corrosion inhibitor.

- (b) sealing the granular composition in a solid film that is permeable to water vapor and to the vapor of the vapor-corrosion inhibitor;
- and
- (c) disposing the sealed granular composition in the enclosure containing the ambient air and the metal components, thereby transforming the granular composition into a gelatinous mass as the granular composition is exposed to the ambient water vapor, slowing the rate of diffusion of the vapor from the vapor-corrosion inhibitor, and prolonging the useful life of the vapor-corrosion inhibitor;
- wherein the vapor-corrosion inhibitor is benzotriazole and the dessicant is potassium poly(acrylate).

- wherein the vapor-corrosion inhibitor is tolyltriazole and the dessicant is potassium poly(acrylate).
A method for extending the service life of a vapor-corrosion inhibitor used in an enclosure containing ambient air and metal components, for protecting the metal components from corrosion caused by ambient water vapor, the method comprising the steps of:
- (a) preparing a granular composition for inhibiting corrosion caused by water vapor in the ambient air, by mixing a granular dessicant which gels upon exposure to water vapor and which comprises an alkali-metal salt of a poly(carboxylic acid) with a granular vapor-corrosion inhibitor which is chemically compatible with the dessicant and which is at least partially soluble in the gelled dessicant, thereby forming a granular composition which upon exposure to water vapor is transformed into a gelatinous mass;
- (b) sealing the granular composition in a solid film that is permeable to water vapor and to the vapor of the vapor-corrosion inhibitor;
- and
- (c) disposing the sealed granular composition in the enclosure containing the ambient air and the metal components, thereby transforming the granular composition into a gelatinous mass as the composition is exposed to the ambient water vapor, slowing the rate of diffusion of the vapor from the vapor-corrosion inhibitor, and prolonging the life of the vapor-corrosion inhibitor.
