Abstract
An apparatus for dissolved air floatation (DAF) and for gas-liquid contacting operations by dissolved air floatation. A number of involute flow channels in a container have inlets and outlets positioned at either end for involutional or evolutional flow of a mixture of liquid and dissolved gas. Liquid turbulence and mixing are prevented in order to achieve a near plug-flow condition for maximum separation. Other uses of the method and apparatus include hydraulic flocculation of suspended matters in a liquid, separation of non-floatable suspended matters, oxidation of dissolved organic matter, activated sludge processes, purification of water using a biocide, separation by absorption of gases, stripping by desorption of dissolved gases, and gas-liquid reactions.
Claims18
A dissolved air floatation apparatus for separating suspended matter from a liquid, comprising, in combination:
- a container having a bottom wall and an upright cylindrical exterior wall for holding said liquid, at least one upright involute partition extending from said bottom wall to a uniform elevation below the top of the exterior wall, said partition having an outer end joining with said exterior wall and a free-standing inner end terminating near the center of said container to form an involute channel, an inlet port means communicating with one end of said channel below the top of said partition for admitting the liquid with the suspended matter into said container, and an outlet port means communicating with the other end of said channel below the top of said partition for discharging the liquid separated from the suspended matter;
- means for dissolving compressed air into a diverted portion of the separated liquid;
- means for mixing at least one fraction of said portion with the liquid and suspended matter admitted at said inlet port means;
- means connected to said container for controlling the liquid level in said container above said uniform elevation;
- and
- means for removing the suspended matter floated to the surface of said liquid by microbubbles of air released from said portion.
In an improved dissolved air flotation apparatus for removing suspended matters from a liquid, said apparatus including a tank having a flow channel, an inlet port at one end of the channel for receiving the liquid and suspended matter, an outlet port at the other end of the channel for discharging liquid separated from the suspended matter, and an extractor above the channel for removing suspended matter floated to the surface of the liquid, the improvement comprising:
- at least one upright involute partition extending from the bottom of the tank to an elevation below the top of the tank, said partition having an outer end joining the side of the tank and a free-standing inner end terminating a radial distance from the center of the tank to form an involute flow channel;
- means for dissolving compressed air in a portion of the liquid discharged at the outlet;
- and
- means for mixing at least a fraction of said portion with the liquid and suspended matter admitted at said inlet port.
A dissolved air floatation apparatus for separating suspended matter from a liquid, comprising, in combination:
- an upright cylindrical tank having an involute partition extending from the bottom to a a uniform elevation below the top of the tank, said partition joining at one end the side of the tank and terminating at the other end a radial distance from the center of the tank to form a generally involute channel communicating at one end with an inlet port means for admitting the liquid and suspended matter and at the other end with an outlet port means in a lower section of said tank for discharging the liquid separated from the suspended matter;
- means for dissolving compressed air in a portion of the discharged liquid;
- means connected to said inlet port means for introducing at least a fraction of said portion into said inlet port means for mixing with the liquid and the suspended matter;
- means disposed in an upper section of the tank for skimming off the suspended matter in the liquid carried to the surface by microbubbles of the air released from the liquid and adhered to the suspended matter;
- and
- means connected to said outlet port means for discharging the liquid at the other end of said channel.
