5-chloroquinolin-8-oxyalkanecarboxylic acid derivatives, useful as antidotes for herbicides

A compound of the formula (I), ##STR72## in which R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 independently of one another are H or (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)-alkyl,

• X is O or S,
• A is (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)-alkylene, (C.sub.4 -C.sub.6)-alkenylene, (C.sub.4 -C.sub.6)-alkynylene, or (C.sub.3 -C.sub.8)-cycloalkylene,
• R.sup.3 is (C.sub.3 -C.sub.6)-alkenyloxy, (C.sub.3 -C.sub.6) -alkynyloxy, phenyl- (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)-alkoxy, in which the phenyl ring is unsubstituted or substituted by one or more radicals selected from the group consisting of halogen, nitro, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)-alkyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)-alkoxy, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4) -haloalkyl and (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4) haloalkoxy;
• or, is (C.sub.3 -C.sub.6)-alkenyloxycarbonyl, (C.sub.3 -C.sub.6)alkynyloxycarbonyl, phenyl-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)-alkoxycarbonyl, in which the phenyl ring is unsubstituted or substituted by one or more radicals selected from the group consisting of halogen, nitro, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)-alkyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)alkoxy, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)-haloalkyl and (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)-haloalkoxy;
• or, is (C.sub.2 -C.sub.6)-alkenylcarbonyl, (C.sub.2 -C.sub.6)-alkynylcarbonyl, a radical of the formula R.sup.8 O--CH(OR.sup.9)--or R.sup.8 O--CH(OR.sup.9)--(CH.sub.2).sub.n --O--, in which n is O, or 2;
• or, is an alkoxy radical of the formula R.sup.8 O-- CHR.sup.10 --CH(OR.sup.9)-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)-alkoxy;
• or, is (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6)-alkylcarbonyloxy in which the alkyl is unsubstituted or substituted by one or more radicals selected from the group consisting of halogen, nitro, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)-alkoxy, phenyl and phenyl substituted by one or more of halogen, nitro, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)-alkyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)-alkoxy, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)-haloalkyl or (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)-haloalkoxy;
• or, is (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6)-alkenylcarbonyloxy, (C.sub.2 -C.sub.6)-alkalkynylcarbonyloxy, phenylcarbonyloxy which is unsubstituted or substituted in the phenyl by one or more radicals selected from the group consisting of halogen, nitro, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)-alkyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)-alkoxy, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)-haloalkyl and (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)-haloalkoxy;
• or, is (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6)-alkylthiocarbonyl, (C.sub.3 -C.sub.6)-alkenylthio or (C.sub.3 -C.sub.6)-alkinylthio,
• R.sup.8 , R.sup.9 independently of one another are (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)-alkyl or together are a straight chain or branched (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)-alkylene bridge, and
• R.sup.10 is H or (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)-alkyl.
